Get ready for truly immersive entertainment. The UltraNUC Pro 8 Fanless is built with a 8th Generation Intel processor all installed in Akasa’s Plato X8 fanless chassis. So whether you’re streaming the latest movie or need to finish that last minute presentation, you’ve got the performance to handle it with ease. With dual-array front microphones, you can take full advantage of Windows 10 and Cortana. Now you’ve got your own digital personal assistant to keep you on time to appointments, help you send email or find that new recipe. Intel NUC Kits also supports 4K at 60 Hz via an HDMI 2.0 port.

Even though the NUC is small in size, it is just as versatile as a full-sized computer whilst being convenient enough to be portable. The HDMI 2.0 output provides full 4K resolution as well as 7.1 digital audio output, (a capable AV Receiver is required). There’s also a Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C port that provides USB 3.1 for faster data transfer or the capabilities of connecting a further two monitors using a daisy chain configuration (a suitable adapter cable is required).

Extensive Connectivity

For such a small chassis, you’d expect to see some lack of connectivity or compromises due to its size. In fact the Intel NUCs have an extensive range of ports available. Both chassis have 2x USB 3.1 ports at the front and at the rear you’ll find a power connector, 1x HDMI 2.0a, 1x LAN, 2x USB 3.1 and a Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C port which supports DisplayPort 1.2 or USB 3.1 gen 2.

Up to Quad-Core Processing Power

Intel’s Core processors are renowned for being the “go-to” CPU for virtually any personal computer. The processors in the NUCs are Intel’s “U” suffix variants. The “U” denotes that the CPU is a lower power alternative to their desktop brothers and as such will consume less power and generate less heat. This makes them perfect for such a small environment.

The UltraNUC can be configured with a choice of the Core i3-8109U, i5-8259U or the beefy Core i7-8559U. As you can see from the table below all CPUs offer different clock speeds. Unlike the previous 7th Gen NUC, the 8th Gen all feature “Turbo Frequency” allowing them to provide that extra performance when required. The i3 is a dual-core processor, making it ideal as home or office PCs, whereas the i5 and i7 feature a quad-core processor, giving them more performance for more demanding jobs (please read “Chassis Differences” below).

i5-8259U4/82.3 GHz3.8 GHz6 MBLink10997
i7-8559U4/82.7 GHz4.5 GHz8 MBLink12214

You can easily travel with the NUC and simply connect it to an LCD TV at the place you’re travelling to - a remote office, hotel room or friend’s house. A whole host of capabilities are possible when connected to the internet via broadband. The NUC is the epitome of versatility and portability. Alternatively, you can enjoy an uncluttered desk with the NUC mounted somewhere out of the way - even behind your monitor! (A VESA monitor mounting bracket is provided, Plato only.)

Chassis Differences

As you will see from the configurator below the UltraNUC Pro 8 Fanless can be built with either Akasa’s Plato X8 or Turing chassis. Apart from the physical dimensions of the chassis there is one other very important aspect that needs to be addressed and that is the cooling each chassis can provide. As the Turing chassis is larger than the Plato it is capable of providing better cooling due the extra surface area.

Please note, that for systems built in the Plato chassis we will disable Turbo boost as this can cause instability. This means when using the Plato the maximum frequency offered is the “Base” frequency (see table above). We therefore recommend that if you want to take full advantage of the Turbo boost feature the 8th gen NUCs offers, then Turing chassis is the one to opt for.

Storage Considerations

When specifying your new PC’s storage options using our system configurator below, you will be offered a choice of drives which vary by price and capacity. There are two primary types of storage. A conventional hard disk drive (HDD) offers huge storage capacity for a low price, but it won’t be especially fast and it will generate a certain amount of running noise since it contains a constantly-rotating spindle. A solid state (SSD) or a M2 drive on the other hand, offer tremendous speed and absolutely silent operation, but they cost more than an HDD for any given capacity.

So if you need a lot of storage space (for videos or large quantities of digital photos for example), then we would recommend an HDD. On the other hand, if you prefer silence and speed (especially boot-up speed), then an SSD or M2 drive would be a better choice. Of course, you can have more than one drive, so you could have the best of both worlds by choosing one of each! We recommend that customers choose an SSD or M2 drive as a boot drive that contains the operating system and important programs. A conventional HDD would store other data but remember that if you intend to have a totally silent PC, you might want to forgo the HDDs altogether as they will make some noise due to their moving parts.

Clean Build™ Promise

The price of many pre-built PCs these days is often supported by cash kickbacks from software companies who pay hardware manufacturers to pre-install limited or trial versions of their software and then hope that the customer pays to upgrade to the full version. The downside to this approach is that the new PC comes pre-loaded with a lot of “junkware” which bloats the operating system and can cause severe performance degradation.

Here at Quiet PC we believe that customers have every right to expect the best possible performance from a brand new PC, so every system we build comes with our Clean Build™ promise. We install the operating system (if you order one), motherboard drivers, OS updates and Microsoft Security Essentials / Windows Defender - that’s it. You won’t be pestered by pop-ups and nag screens and you can get on with using your new PC immediately without having to uninstall lots of junkware first. Your new machine will boot in super-quick time and will stay running quickly for many months and years to come.

Free hardware support and fully inclusive warranty

We offer free hardware technical support for as long as you own the machine. This support covers any hardware query or problem, including advice on maintenance and upgrades. We regret we can’t offer software support or training so we would recommend contacting the software vendor in this instance.

Our hardware warranty runs for two years and is “collect and return” meaning that you don’t need to worry about getting the machine back to us - we will instruct our courier to collect it from you on a day of your choosing, then after we have checked and repaired it, we will send it back to you by express courier at our expense. In addition, unlike many other PC suppliers, we have an “open-case” policy which means you are free to open the machine and perform your own minor modifications or upgrades without worrying that your warranty might be affected.
